Contact Me

With over 35 years of experience in criminal defense, I have tried more than 135 jury trials and many bench trials. This includes 10 murder trials, one aggravated murder trial and an assortment of other types of state, federal and local cases. I have won acquittals in many cases including murder and federal drug cases and have done more than 30 appeals at both the Federal and State levels.

Career Path

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1978, I started my career as a criminal defense attorney in Chicago with an environmental public interest group, focusing on federal court litigation of environmental and civil rights cases. In 1981 I came to Seattle, and from 1982 to 1990, I was a staff attorney with the Seattle King County Public Defender Association. In my last two years there, I worked as the training coordinator, teaching new lawyers how to defend. Since 1990, I have been practicing criminal defense in a solo law firm here in Seattle.

I am a member of the Washington State Bar Association, the Washington and National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and Adjunct Professor of Law at Seattle University School of Law.

Ask Me About...

What should I do if I'm arrested for driving under the influence?
What happens during a felony arrest?

Drug Cases

The Police arrested me and searched me without a warrant.

Is that legal?

Federal Cases

What happens if I am indicted for a felony in federal court?

Will I be asked to testify?

Assertion of Rights Card

Politely hand this to an officer:

  • I will provide my driver's license, registration and proof of my insurance
  • I will sign a citation, if any, then I want to leave immediately
  • I will not answer any questions without an attorney present
  • I do not have to, and refuse to, do any "field sobriety tests"
  • If I am arrested, I want to speak with an attorney, Robert Goldsmith (206) 623-1592. If an attorney there is not available, I want a public defender.
  • I will submit to a breath test, provided I can speak to an attorney first. If I am requested to take a breath test, I also want an additional legal blood test.
  • If I am not under arrest, I want to leave. Please tell me so I may lock my car and walk away. Thank you.
